VLSI Research Inc.

The discovery of the transistor is one of the most important inventions of the twentieth century, ranking up there with the computer and the aeroplane. In this video, Michael Riordan, co-author of Crystal Fire, discusses how it came to be, starting with the discovery of the electron, late in the nineteenth century, to the invention of the transistor in the early-twentieth century and finally its discovery at Bell Labs. He discusses the tremendous vision of Mervin Kelly, who ran the Labs at the time and why directed research is so important.
