VLSI Research Inc.

Robert Noyce has been called the father of Silicon Valley. A giant among giants, he co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor, Intel, and SEMATECH. His vision took him from technologist to corporate leader to statesmen for an entire industry. A fierce competitor, he also created his own competition in providing early funding for AMD. He foresaw a bigger pie that more competition would only help build. Ironically, his most important contribution to the world, the invention of the Integrated Circuit, has almost been forgotten by his early death. It was his invention – using a planar transistor – that would become the IC in use today and be the driver behind Moore’s Law. Kilby’s invention would become the hybrid circuit and evolve into today’s multi-chip package.
